Apremont-sur Allier, labelled one of the Most Beautiful Village of France situated along the River Allier, in the Center of France, is a small village where, many years ago, stone cutting was the main “industry”. The hewn were being loaded on barges or flat bottom boats (locally known as “gabare”) to reach several towns along the River Allier to the Loire River. Several sacred buildings of the area were constructed with these stones, for example Orleans Cathedral…
Most of the houses of the village were built during the 15th century. Eugene Schneider II, a wealthy master ironworker is the one to praise for their refurbishment. He was married to the castle owner’s daughter, he had really a crush for the village. After having bought all the houses in the ’30s, with a French architect, Mr. de Galéa, had them restored in the traditional Berrichon style.
Now, that you almost know everything about Apremont, let’s admire its houses of character.

Thanks a lot for your nice words, my friend… Me too I love roofs… Specially these type of ancient tiles and also those covered with slates. They have much character if I may say so. Talking about roof, I will be taking part in an international postcard swapping, which is set up (since more than 10 years, I think) by a photographer/blogger – very talented actually- and I have chosen roof as my topic for the swap…
