Sabine Weiss
Sabine Weiss is the last representative of the French humanist school of Photography, such as Robert Doisneau, Edouard Boubat, Willy Ronis… Looking at her 130 photos, mostly in black and white, you can grasp her very strong feeling for the Human being. She says that in each shot, she is attracted towards Sensibility while her eye is targeted towards the detail of day-to-day life. She talks about herself: “I am just a witness of what I see…”.
She worked in the fields of fashion photography, advertising, she did quite a lot of photos for world known magazines “Vogue”, “L’Officiel”, “The New York Times”. No editing, no photomontage, no special effect in any of her shots. She feels somewhat frustrated saying that nowadays photography is so easy…

Sabine Weiss’s photos are a real treasure !
WOW wonderful photography.
The impact of the black and white is profound.
Thank you for introducing me to someone I did not know about.
I watched the slideshows several times.
Some fabulous time capsule photos in the first series.
That cobblestone street with the figure and shadows almost moves and the boys on the mail box. All brilliant.
Her comment on photography now is so interesting as well.

Glad you enjoyed the “discovery” of this great Lady of French Photography. Her images are so powerful, black and white strongly increases them. Thank you Patty for stopping by… xo
Wonderful portrait artist! Did you get to see her work up close and personal? You’ve also introduced me to a photographer I didn’t know. Thank you! Lovely post!
The exhibition featured her works and I was really thrilled to attend. She is one if my best French photographer of all times, now aged 92 years old… With huge modesty, I join her in her way she talks about Photography, the feeling being stumbling block of shootings… Glad to have introduced this Lady to you, Nanette!
Wonderful!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for sharing her work with us, a discovery for me. Just amazing! Black and white is always so provocative. and that red umbrella – WOW!
Thank you for visiting, Sheila. Glad to know that you liked Sabine Weiss’s work. Yes the red umbrella pops out, it’s a photo Sabine did for Dior…
Bises!
much like Vivian Maier
Yes there are some similarities, Daryl. The only thing is that Maier never knew she is famous while Weiss, who is now 92, does. Am fond of the works of these two Ladies of Photography…

Wonderful post, Louise. Reminds me of Vivien Maier. Will do some research. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
I thought the same, Jane… One difference is that Vivien Maier passed without knowing that she is famous, while Sabine Weiss was at the Opening of her Exhibition, she is 93 but doing well… Glad my post allowed you to “discover” this Grand Lady of Photography… Have a nice day!
Amazing!
She is indeed… I love her work, pure Photography. Thanks for stopping by.
Passe un très bon week end louise
Bisous
Thanks for introducing us to Sabine – wow – her work is great – and the easy photos of today have different challenges, but it is truly a different time!
